Nice game because, i feel in control...

(+1)

I see my self as quite bad with platformer controls and I'm making a platformer alone! This was a true lifesaver to me. Keep it up

Was really fun, and there was a lot more game mechanics to just movement than I thought
(-2)

The spring mechanic is infuriating. I just could not figure out how they worked. I had to just cheese my way past the spikes.

(+1)

increase air acceleration in the jump menu

(+2)

this game is so cool.

(+1)

Interesting! I ended up with something very close to Celeste for running, but with a little less acceleration! Close to it, too for running.

(+1)

hey, i  see everyone saying how good this is, but i kinda cant play it, she doesnt move jump, or do anything in the browser version for me, only things that work are the mouse controled ones, can anyone help me?

(+1)

use either the arrow keys, or the wasd keys to move. space bar to jump. make sure the last thing you clicked was in the game too

OOOOHHHH i forgot to click, thanks man!

OOOOHHHH i forgot to click, thanks man!

THIS IS A MUST HAVE!

I'm a teacher and this will definitely be in my next year's class at some point!

You call it essay but this is actually a master class! Congratulations and keep doing them! I'm sure you can find other themes to add to the collection!

Thank you for this amazing assets!

video game essay

(+1)

i adore this

(+1)

Incredible idea

(+1)

Mark, this is amazing! It's an increadiblet tool to have. Thank you and the team for this.

(+2)

This was very helpful, and a select few points were very informative even OUTSIDE platformer design. Thanks again, Mark!

(+1)

Damn thats pretty good.

(+1)

Don't miss this excellent research on jumping http://www.martinf.dk/jump/

This. Is. Amazing !

Fabulous!

(-3)

A slightly updated Game Feel (game-feel.com)

Cool, I guess

I teached me a lot ! Thanks

(+1)

This is amazing and I love it, and should be necessary playing for anyone interested in learning about game feel. One note: version you show in the youtube video has a "?" help button next to the Air Control and Air Acceleration sliders, but this version does not. I had to kinda guess what they mean.

(-2)

You can just jump over almost everything lol

(+1)

you made your jump too high. the goal is to make it fun, not to beat the level

i know that

really nice game😵😵😵

(+1)

It's really cool and teaches you maybe how you want your platformer to be.

(+1)

10/10 this is a great tool to explain character movement

(-14)

Is a virus?

There's no download description

(+2)

wdym

(+4)

it's from gmtk

(-7)

?

(+7)

gmtk is really trusted. and no, it's not a virus.

(+4)(-2)

this guy is an idiot

(+1)

No it is not. Its from GMTK (Game Makers Toolkit) from Youtube. Try to search for him and he will introduce this game in his video.

Why would it be a Virus?

(+1)(-8)

There's many malweres in itch.io

(+2)

i mean you can just play the web version lol its right there

(+1)

Really interesting and helpful for people like me who are learning to tweak platformers!

this was fun!

fun

(+1)

I love how turning speed, lookahead and jump to the max creates Canabalt.

Very interesting stuff, would definitely take a course if you were the teacher.

sooo cooool !

(+1)

very nice! my one suggestion is adding captions to the presets-- i couldn't quite tell which was which apart from mario/celeste!

(+5)

Mario, Sonic, Celeste, Super Meat Boy

(-3)

Wdym?

I think I found a bug:

If you set the acceleration and deceleration to very small, the movement is very strange. Moving right and then immediately moving left makes Kit slide, but if you stop completely, and THEN turn left, Kit starts moving immediately. The latter should be how the game always responds, I think.

(+1)

That isn't a bug, it is a feature. There is a setting called turn speed which controls how fast you turn

(1 edit) (+2)

I'm on Trug's side; This feels like a bug, not a useful feature. The turn-time should come from the interaction of acceleration, speed and deceleration, not be a separate number that you have to manually fiddle with when you change the others. (Although as a tool for learning game-development skills, maybe this is a secret lesson in itself. :)

(1 edit) (+2)

I think i agree with Trun : if not a bug it at least doesn't feel right, if you acceleration is supposed to be fast you should accelerate in the opposite direction at the same rate wether you're moving or not.

This is how it would be if you coded the first panel in the most straightforward way possible, so yeah it feels like a bug and i feel like the turn speed thing is not very clear about how it does what it does at least for me

That being said the essay is still fun but that feels like an oversight

very good:

-explanation

-visuals

-controls

-gameplay

-music

-plot

100/10 game, would recommend to family and friends. hopefully, there will be a sequel!

9/10

This is a really good game, but the scroll bar is a tad bit too slow; Anyways thanks os much I know know a thing or a million about platforming :D

(1 edit) (+1)

This game shows the fundamentals of player movmement amazingly. Well done, love your videos. Thanks for this amazing game.

This was really cool. My only recommendation: the scroll bar (under Juice and Settings) moved really slowly when using the scroll wheel.
